With the freedom to build as you wish at Brays Island, owners are able to create a stunning sanctuary that fits perfectly into the natural setting that surrounds it. Built as a vacation home for the owners, the Gerry Cowart designed home at 2 Smithfield Place was aptly named “Winterhaven” to serve as an escape from chilly Maine winters. This thoughtful home was custom built by Hammie Langford who has built almost exclusively at Brays for the last 30 years. Known for his incredible craftsmanship, you’ll find one of a kind details throughout the home from the stately two-story trophy room to the wall-to-wall walnut study and sunken wine cellar.
Natural light streams through the floor to ceiling windows in the formal living room for expansive marsh views at any time of day. Mornings are spent sipping coffee and reveling in views from the first floor master suite and private deck before heading to the quail fields or on a nature walk. After a round of golf or shooting clays, afternoons are made for retiring to the screened porch to enjoy the magnificent sunsets over the marsh. Whether grilling at the outdoor kitchen, roasting oysters, sitting beside the outdoor fireplace or conversing around the fire pit, evenings provide for plenty of outdoor living.
Just off the kitchen porch, the fire pit built into the backyard is perfect for gathering and entertaining under the age old oaks that frame the home. A luscious garden is adorned with many majestic live oaks, while the crape myrtles, indica azaleas and camellias add color when in bloom. With the occasional family of deer meandering through the yard or the blue birds floating through the garden, there is no shortage of wildlife views from any of the three porches and decks.
Owners with a strong passion for worldwide hunting endeavors built a detached 3,000 square foot, two-story trophy room, complete with a full butler’s pantry and sunken wine cellar. Two Eurocave units and expansive racks provide room to store several hundred bottles of wine. The custom showcase not only offers plenty of space for entertaining or a quiet retreat, but can be converted to a private guest home if desired. Space abounds to relax with friends and family, play pool, catch the game on TV, or simply share travel stories.
While central to any activity on the plantation, the boat dock, quail fields and golf course are all within easy reach. Located on a private cul-de-sac, the close proximity to activities lends to an active lifestyle the Owners enjoy while at Brays Island. Favorites range from an afternoon on the golf course or exploring the Nature Center, to hunting in the quail fields with a dog by their side or the variety of classes at the fitness center - yoga, pilates, lift & tone - and attending any of the numerous social events. Any day is appropriate for savoring a good book while soaking up the majestic scenery of Brays Island from the privacy of this home.
