A Closer Look
A favorite among many, the Pocotaligo River trail brings you through wooded areas and around ponds, all while overlooking the gorgeous river that runs along the western side of Brays. Starting at the Equestrian Center, this hour-long trail ride begins by bringing riders down the iconic oak-lined driveway offering a beautiful view of the historic Inn to the left and sweeping vistas of the Pocotaligo River to the right. As you pass by the Inn and the tennis courts, the trail winds you over a dyke where you’ll often see other Owners and guests fly fishing or crabbing in the ponds or some of the many birds including egrets and blue herons.
Aptly named, the Pocotaligo River trail hugs the river as it winds around the property giving you breathtaking water views, particularly at high tide. Fiddler crabs scurry past and there’s always a nice breeze even on a hot Southern day. The sandy road loops around, giving you an elevated view of the river on the way back toward Turkey Pond where a beautiful osprey nest resides.
Following the dirt road back to Brays Island Drive, the Pocotaligo River trail overlooks eight acres of paddock as you make your way past Woods Pond, which offers some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets on the property. The vast view of the Pocotaligo River with large driftwood and reeds blowing in the wind completes the iconic Lowcountry picture. Looping back through the lush fields toward the Equestrian Center to conclude this river trail ride, you’ll often see deer or fox squirrels meandering about the 15 acres of pasture.
With more than 100 acres of paddock and 60 miles of horse trails, horses and Owners have enough room to roam and explore. Whether you’re an avid equestrian or a beginner in your equestrian pursuits, there are horses and trails to match Owners’ interest levels and experience. Safety, education and enjoyment is always of the utmost importance at the Brays Island Equestrian Center.
