HowWeTriathlon1

While we appreciate the traditional triathlon of biking, swimming and running, we like to give our owners a bit of a different take on standard traditions. For the last decade, we’ve held our one-of-a-kind Brays Island Triathlon, where owners compete in teams across disciplines including shooting, golfing and fishing – activities our owners and their guests are well-versed in.

A “draw party” kicks off the weekend on Friday evening where each participant is assigned to a 4-person team. To keep the competition on an even playing field, our Director of Shooting Sports and Head Golf Pro balance the teams based on expertise in each discipline and group team members appropriately. With 24 participants this year, we had a total of six teams. Since our owners’ skill levels range from expert to beginner in each discipline, teams and scoring are designed to balance skill level for all participants.

Beginning on Saturday morning, teams head to the Gun Club to compete in the first leg of the triathlon – the sporting clays competition. The typical clays course is shortened from the usual 100-Bird/15-Station set up to a 60-Bird/10-Station course for this event. Each four person team has 90 minutes to complete the course.

Next up, teams enjoy lunch at The Plantation Grill and then hop in their golf carts and ride over to the clubhouse where they prepare for the golf competition. Played on the back nine of the Ron Garl-designed golf course, teams tee off for the 9-hole team handicap scramble where they play best ball on each shot for this leg of the competition.

The competition heats up with the last round consisting of fishing in several of the on-site ponds. Participants change out of their golf clothes and replace their clubs with fishing poles on their golf carts. Teams are allotted one hour and one line per team member to bait and hook as many bass and bream as they can. With a staff member on site to measure and release each catch, teams are scored on number of inches and the team with the most inches of bass and bream caught wins!

The day culminates with an awards reception at The Plantation Grill where the champions receive their trophies and all participants relish in the fun had that day. Winning teams are recognized in each discipline as well as overall champion. This year we had one team dominate both shooting and fishing events, while an entirely different team, who came in second in each event, took home the 2019 Brays Triathlon trophy. We love that we’re able to offer such a unique event for our owners that can only be found at Brays Island.
